Today I received two Twitter Direct Messages, both with the .ru top level domain and both with the following message:
“You seen what this person is saying about you? name.ru terrible things...”

Well, my first thought was what can anyone say that is so terrible about me (I’m such a nice guy, LOL).

Anyway before doing anything I thought I’d copy the sentence and paste it into the search field of my browser to see would come up, and as I suspected. Indeed, it appear to be a phishing scam so watch out folks.

The sneaky thing about this is that it may appear to be coming from someone you know, making it easy to be tricked into clicking the link and inadvertently giving away your details.

Or it may be you’ve had multiple fan pages intended for specific purposes but by the time you were ready to use them, the Facebook way of doing things changed right under your nose ?

Do you ever feel like starting all over again, but this time keeping things squeaky clean and organized ?

When Facebook was first introduced to the world it went through a multitude of changes; growth, re-adjustments, privacy rules, deletions and additions, plus a lot of skepticism from the general public.

Today, even though the skepticism is still here, people have grown to feel generally more comfortable with FB, as we discover just how best to use the platform and its many features.

To begin with more and more people are using Facebook for business whilst most of their friends may still simply want to use it for entertainment, or both. The mixture of reasons for using Facebook didn’t at first make sense to a lot of people and I suppose many people not fully aware of all the features and how they were intended to be used would open multiple accounts for different purposes, namely business and personal, a lot of people annoyed their friends and probably broke many rules without knowing, plus the individuals that inadvertently disclosed information they would have rather kept private or just amongst a few selected people. Things started getting messy ....

However, the organically growing social network has steadily learnt for itself what it needs to survive, or moreover, what its actual users need to keep them active and the network useful.

I believe what has made Facebook successful is that it has been mostly grown or fueled by its users, their needs, wants, behavior and preferences. It has become like a ‘virtual opinion’ that represents the globe (I know, that might sound a little rash).

Anyway, currently things are more settled and a better understanding of how best to use facebook is underway. We still have Groups, although I have heard they will be phased out, how true this is and why ? - I don’t know, but in addition we also have Fan Pages, or what I call; Follow or Engagement Pages, which seems to be more popular but is basically the same as a Group only that the settings and privileges are slightly different. In saying that, do not be surprised if by the time you have read this article, things have changed again...

Yes, your right and my point is - Google Plus allows the opportunity to start all over again and carefully nurture and tease out the conversation or interaction you are really looking for. I believe unless you have clumps of followers in categories of similar interest, you should take it slowly. This time create ‘real followers’, ones who are genuinely interested. Think of LinkedIn and how it has maintained its more professional or academic personality compared to that of Facebook’s.

Link-Theft, Does it Really Happen?

Over the years I have come across many techniques used by marketers that have an unappealing demeanor, which is what I suppose gives marketing some of it’s mystifying personality. But that’s not what I want to take a look at right now. There is still one ruse which I have yet to unravel - and that is the practice of link-theft and does this it really happen?

Now, tell me how exactly does this work and does using a URL Shortner really help ? I haven’t read or heard of anyone claiming that their referral links have been stolen, have you? But then again how would you know?

I have heard and read from various sources, that there have been cases where an affiliate decides to promote his or her own product, and NOT make it available to other affiliates. Only to later find reference to sales not pertaining to the solo affiliate or product owner - suggesting that a link may have been hijacked and used by someone else...

The main problem here is, that measuring link-theft isn’t that easy. Whilst we can measure actual sales of a product, measuring how or where the customers of these sales came from in order to make their purchases in the first place, can be tainted with an anomaly of events.

Does that make sense so far ?

None-the-less we still take some precautions and come to accept that URL shortners and link cloaking software are not just for creating shorter prettier looking links, or for perhaps tracking, but also for protecting your valuable referral links from being hijacked.

Or do they ?

It depends on how or where you are promoting, as well as whether your referral ID can be found by a “BlackHat” software. Let me explain this a little; basically there are programs designed to search for and compile referral links based on a specified search criteria or niche. So, a link-thief can simply create a list of relevant links to replace with his or her ID. Exactly how these work, and how many other similiar programs are out there is probably not known

The more subtle methods are possibly things you use everyday but was not totally aware of. The use of Adware, sounds useful, doesn’t it ?

Well, let me tell you about Adware or Advertising Supported Software; in my understanding, Adware is any type of software that allows advertisements to automatically display or perform other functions often without you having to think about it or even know. This would be considered a handy feature, where you experience seamless connectivity and interaction with whatever program it is that you are using...

However, wouldn’t this potentially open the door for the release of spyware and other invasive software? I am only hypothesising here, but couldn’t this be a way in for link-thieves too. Yes? but thats not where its really at - Is it ?

No! People are actually designing software to do this. Take a look on YouTube and if the videos are still active, you’ll soon find ways in which link-theft can take place.

The use of Adware is ubiquitous, if you’ve ever used Shareware software then you’ve probably experienced being given free access to the main features of a program, but NOT without the appearance of advertising, well that’s Adware. In this type of situation, the adware is normally harmless and is only to encourage the user to upgrade, and in doing so will receive use of the software free of any advertising.

So what are the commonly known methods of Link-Theft ?

The most common practice is where individuals sign up directly for the affiliate program you are promoting and removes your link and then replaces it with theirs in order to get a discount based on the commission rate you would have received for that product. So, if you would have received $70 on a $100 product, the link-thief would only end up paying $30 for that product.

Another trick is to hide an affiliate link code in a 1x1 iframe. In the case where affiliates are paid for being the last link that results in a sale, this one is pretty relevant.

This iframe code is then used as a sort of relay that kicks in with and behaves as an in-between that connects a buyer with a merchant. In doing so, your referral link is also replaced... ( to be continued ?)

Ohh the joys of working from home, lol

It’s 3:25 AM and for some reason I have gotten up from bed far earlier than I need to. As I make my way to the kitchen I notice the ants are still busy at work making good of the biscuit crumbs on the kitchen work-top, probably left behind by my 8 year old nephew.   (Ohh the joys of working from home, lol)

With a cup of coffee I make my way to the area of the house currently designated as my office...

This is one of the advantages of working from home; the quick commute to your office space, the freedom and flexibility to work when you want, well, within reason of course and to always be available to your family, especially ‘the little ones’ but really that all depends on what type of work you’re talking about and just how busy you are, besides other factors, such as petty disturbances.

Also, if at any time you need to liaise with other people that; do work the typical hours, have to travel to an office, break for lunch at the same time every day and often can’t wait for the day to end, such freedom and flexibility may not be as forthcoming, as you may find yourself having to work within their timeframe. So if you believe that working from home is always as relaxing as it may sound, this is not the always the case, so be prepared.

So, still in my gym jams...

I decide to clean up this blog, I have been meaning to do so for some time and as I go through some of the posts I cringe, and think, what trifle, did I really say or think that ? It’s funny how many of these online programs excite you at first and only until you start using them you realize how crap they really are. Most of them are. However, in saying that, a lot of them are only as crap as you want them to be.

Call me naive but I always find something to learn when I sign up to these, even if its just how the program owners trick their victims into a false perception. You see my take on this is that most of these guys take advantage of what YOU don’t know, which fundamentally there is nothing wrong, after all you’d pay a mechanic to repair your car, especially if you don’t know how to repair it yourself, even if the solution is as simple as a few wrist movements and the correct sized spanner. Anyway, my point is people pay for what they don’t know or can’t do themselves, moreover, people pay for things that make their the work easier.

Take a look through some of the posts right here in this blog. You’ll find some helpful tips that may or may not work for you, but ultimately that really all depends on you. If you lack patience, are lazy or looking for quick cash (Yes, you’ve heard it before) you’ll be better off trying your luck at the lottery.

Most of the programs that I personally find interesting and of use are the ones that can easily be incorporated into the daily running of your existing business or businesses, whether you manage multiple income streams or a single product or service. Of all the Internet Marketing, online revenue generating programs, methods and techniques plus new ones emerging everyday, the ones I don’t like are the ones that seem not to have a product or means of being financially self sustaining. In many cases it doesn’t take a lot of effort in working them out, they are practically everywhere, schemes disguised as something else and constanly demanding your cash, but never able to justify your expenditure

It is far better to have a business which you have control of. A business where you may offer your experience, skills or talents. A business where perhaps you are able to provide something useful, informative and ideally in demand, but surely this is all very obvious. Which takes me back to the ants, you see, once you have a product or service which people find useful the trick now is to get the word around about your business.

Now, have you ever carefully watched the way ants work together, all for a common cause ? A few biscuit crumbs, let call this the desirable product, may at first attract a single ant but before you know it there’ll be a thousand more all seemingly tagging each other as the make there way to and from the location of the crumbs.

schedule.

Another thing, the owner seems to be floundering with different ideas,
changing his mind as he goes along (hey things change!), he is now deciding
whether to use the initial sub-domain trick, or as I explained earlier above you
buy your own, in which case the programs USP of being a 100% free no longer
stands. But by all means take a look , It does seem to have potential plus you
get 4 other sites, and a few ideas for other stuff.

If there is any Internet Business Social Network that I would highly recommend without the slightest grimace, it would be APSense. Internet Eyes, as the service is known will be offering rewards to individuals for remotely watching CCTV footage from the comfort of their homes and to report occurrences of any crime observed.

The men responsible for setting up Internet Eyes, David Steele, Tony Morgan and James Woodward, claim that with over 4 million CCTV cameras available but not utilised efficiently, this project could be the biggest crime prevention scheme ever, by offering registered users the chance of earning up to £1,000 per month for participating in what may be considered a Global Neighbourhood watch. Participants will be rewarded for spotting and reporting, burglary, vandalism, shoplifting or anti-social behaviour.

Whilst this may be considered a great idea by some, there are also those who feel that this is simply a way of priming society into becoming snitches, and finds the fact that one has to pay a fee to participate make the scheme a BIG SCAM. People are also concerned with privacy and misuse of the system. Some has even dubbed the system a s a new Reality Game TV Show.

The online Instant Event Notification System is intended to help combat crime, and although the company’s terms and conditions state that images should not be copied, there is nothing to prevent this from happening, regardless of any Data Protection Laws. Therefore registered users are required to verify there ages and ID and pay a membership fee intended to prevent misuse of the system and act as a filter for those inclined towards voyeurism.

From the top of my head I can already start to think of ways of foiling at least 3 of the above, however I also know how to spot any manipulation so perhaps and hopefully for now, this system stands a chance of being successful.

Most of these after a while become a mish mash of confusion or don’t actually seem to have any effect. But for me what makes some of these services horrible to use is the design and navigation.
